"The Crown Will Suit Me, As It Never Suited Robert and Would Not Suit Stannis..."

Last week, we did one brother, this week the other.  The other half of the Baratheon Starter Set Commanders, today we take at look at Renly.

Being a MOSTLY metallic paint job, Renly is going be a VERY simply paint job, and if you've never picked up a brush before, a good place to start..  That is if you plan on pledging your fealty to Highgarden.

1. Gameplan, Prep, and Prime

Again, like his brother Stannis, for Renly, we're going to be sticking closely with the in game art, because it's just way cooler than what we got from the HBO series.

The green armor is just so cool...

Anyway, here's what we'll be using for today:

Vallejo

Army Painter

You'll see some Necron Compound in the picture above, but I ended up not using it.

I've already primed the miniature white with my airbrush and some Stynylrez primer.  I went with white because it really helps the colors pop when you basecoat it, and for a flashy character like Renly, that's what we want.

2. Basecoats

The first thing we'll be doing is using our metallic green, unthinned, to paint the armor.  This is going to do most of the work for us, but you'll want to make sure that you get some paint in all of the little nooks and crannies to make sure that you don't have any white showing through, but at the same time, you want to try to avoid his cape as much as possible.

From here on out, you'll want to thin your paints with equal parts water and move onto painting the face with your basic skin tone.  Nothing too fancy, but make sure you paint the ear and the neck.

Next, we'll move onto painting the belt, skirt, sheath, hair, and outside of the cape.  For the hair, make sure that you leave a little portion of the ear exposed because it's a little detail that helps make the model pop.

Notice that I've left the front, or underside, of the cape completely white.  That's because we need it that color for what comes next.

Painting that portion yellow!  Take your deep yellow and paint the underside, inside, or front (whatever you want to call it) of Renly's cape.  This adds a nice pop of color, and keeps with the theme you'll see in his in-game art underneath his armor of having black cloth on with yellow accents.

After that, take your old gold, unthinned, and paint the hilt and pommel of the sword, along with the metallic portions of the scabbard, including the large decorative portion.  You'll also want to paint the belt buckle on the front of the model at this time.

The last thing we'll be basecoating will the the blade of the sword, and for that, simply use unthinned plate mail metal.

When it's all dry, it's time for shades.

3. Shades

Even though Renly was a simpler model to paint than Stannis, we'll be using many more washes to add depth.

We'll be using Light Tone, Flesh Wash, and Green Tone by the Army Painter along with some Nuln Oil by Citadel.

Start with the flesh wash, and just apply a thin layer over the face and neck in order to give the model some depth.

Next, take your green tone and apply all over the armor.  Remember to work in portions of the model at a time, so start with one arm, cover it completely, then move onto the next, etc.  Make sure that you do your best to not get any on the yellow portion of the cape, as it's a STRONG color that you'll have to repaint.

I don't say this often, but let this wash COMPLETELY dry before moving onto the next step, as you don't want the washes to mix and run into weird places.

Next, take your light tone and apply it to the yellow portions of the cape.

And finish off by taking your nuln oil and applying it to the sword, scabbard, belt, hair, and black portion of the cape.

When it's all dry, it's time for highlighting.

4. Highlights and Finishing Touches

The first thing we'll be doing is using our basic skin tone to highlight the face.  As you can see, I've painted the forehead, cheekbones, nose, and chin.

After that, take your chocolate brown and apply a few highlights to Renly's hair.  Just paint a few of the locks from a top down perspective, and it'll add JUST that little bit of tint that'll make it look interesting.

You can also use this color to add his eyebrows.

Next, mix together a one to one ratio of german grey and white (and equal parts water) and use that to highlight the black portions of the skirt, cape, and belt.  Simply paint any of the folds or anywhere the fabric billows outward.

Here's an idea of where you'd apply those highlights to the back of the model.  Not many highlights in all, but they help make the model pop with the solid black background, so make sure you do them.

The last thing we'll be highlighting will be the underside of the cape.  Using your deep yellow again, paint the center where the cape billows outward, leaving the recesses where the light tone darkened the most alone.

5. Win Highgarden!

That's it, Westerosi!  Base him however you like and spray him with your matt spray and get that guy into a unit of Wardens!
