Get Hype! Tiny Ninjas

By 2niverse Games

Hello, Ninja...

Today's edition of Get Hype! is looking at an adorably deadly game known as Tiny Ninjas by 2niverse Games.  Tiny Ninjas is a 2 player press your luck style battle game where each player controls the Sensei of a Ninja Dojo, battling for dominance.  And the moniker "Tiny" doesn't just extend to the use of Chibi style artwork.  It extends to the size of the game itself!  You see, Tiny Ninjas was designed to be taken with you, with the Kickstarter campaign showcasing that the game can be played wherever you go!

"A travel game, Mike Meeple?  REALLY?"

Hey, I get it.  Travel games were like the biggest tease EVER.  If you're anything like me, when you were a kid, you were expecting this:

Best road trip ever...

But what you got was this:

Cue "Price is Right" failure music...

But in a Mike Meeple exclusive interview with designer Ryan Leininger, games that fit inside a tiny box are his specialty, "2niverse Games will specialize in 2-player games that play inside of the box...  My wife and I travel a lot for work so I wanted to create something that we could bring with us to play anywhere we were and that didn’t limit us to playing just on a table."

And while the box is small, the gameplay appears to be anything but.  When players attack each other, they play one of the cards from their hands, telling you which of the custom dice to roll along with the effect the die roll produces.  Players can repeat this process as much as they want, but they have to be careful because the cards in your hand are also what you use to defend.  So that means if you get too aggressive, it can leave you helpless.

This gameplay, mixed with the lighter thematic art, makes Tiny Ninjas appear to be a game that will interest both children and adults, which as an adult who does indeed travel with children on a regular basis, is appreciated VERY much.

Such little angels...

"I wanted to keep things softer and create more of a fun and light-hearted emotional tone. Battling in the same sense as Pokemon, for example."

Dice rolling has always been my preferred method of combat, and it's even more entertaining when you throw in custom dice, like the two included in the game, "[Having custom dice] was in the plans from the very beginning...  Cool dice that were specific to the game. Originally both dice had the same shuriken icon sets...  but later on decided to make one dice different with kunai icons which dramatically improved the rolling structure."

Ninjas Ninja Hard All Day...

Tiny Ninjas is currently on Kickstarter, with the campaign running until June 22nd, so there is still time to back and lock in your copy.  While already funded, Tiny Ninjas looks to include a variety of stretch goals including a solo mode.  In fact 2niverse games is starting to look like the definitive game company when it comes to travel games, "This first project is a 1v1 battle game, and the next game will be a co-op game. Similar to a dungeon delve, except it will be going through forest and mountain landscapes before finally reaching a boss battle."

Well, let me just put away my copy of Massive Darkness Travel Edition and sign me up.
